 Support Luke Gurney

The Sassaquin neighborhood is deeply saddened by the accidental passing of a Sassaquin neighbor,         Luke Gurney.  Luke's parents lived on the pond for many years where Luke developed a love for being on the water. Luke had many life long friends in the area who enjoyed his friendship growing up in Sassaquin. Luke's love for fishing continued to grow as he moved to the Vineyard and acquired his own fishing boat "No Regrets".  His love for fishing remained a source of daily life while his love for family, friends and community occupied his loving heart. It is not very common that we can go through life with "No Regrets"

Newtown Conn. tribute to the little angels and brave educators. A short bio on the impact they had on others and a face to the names. Take a minute to read each story, it is truly heart breaking. How can we ever forget this tragic event. I know I have seen these smiling faces in the many classrooms I have been in.       http://www.people.com/people/static/h/package/tragedyconnecticutschoolshooting/index.html

Thunder clouds roll north across Sassaquin Pond. Hot, hazy, humid, weather for early July.

Algae Bloom Information from Sarah  Algae bloom still affecting pond (12-6-2012 ) Sarah thinks it is moving around the pond due to the wind direction. This is the longest duration of an algae bloom that I can remember, usually the colder weather and indirect sun rays signal the end of the blooms.

Algae bloom still affecting Sassaquin Pond as of last week in December. I also noticed this near the pumping station when we had an over night freeze.

Thanks to Liz Miller for the photo.

Sensitive Area Designation approved by EAC

August 27, 2012

In a meeting at New Bedford City Hall the Environmental Affairs Committee passed the Sassaquin Pond  Environmental Designation. A large crowd from the Sassaquin neighborhood listened attentively as members of city council questioned city officials about the conditions and efforts of city departments and Sassaquin neighbors to maintain a high quality of water at the pond.

On motions by Councilors Lawrence and Gomes the EAC passed the Sassaquin Designation by and 8-0 vote. An impassioned plea by John Gurney a former resident and Conservation Commission member  urged the council to pass the motion now and worry about the nuts and bolts of the motion language at a later date.

The efforts by the Sassaquin neighbors along with John Gurney, Sarah Porter, Ron LaBelle, and Councilor Jim will hopefully translate into maintaining a high quality water level at the pond.

Councilor Lawrence's motion had a fast track component added, and Councilor Gomes motion added language to inform and involve the local state delegation.

All in all it was a very good night for Sassaquin Pond.

Sassaquin Pond Restoration Planning Grant accepted by DEP

from Sarah Porter,  Good news we have been awarded the Sassaquin Pond Restoration Storm Water grant from the DEP. This in addition to Ron LaBelle's  DPI proposed  plans for the pond, puts us in a good position to make some important steps forward in keeping the water quality at the pond at a high level.
