Sassaquin Pond Betterment Alliance Meetings

  Winter 2011-2012

Well, just maybe there wasn't a winter of 2011-2012, unless you enjoy paying those heating oil bills. When we last met we were hoping for a pond freeze to cut the phragmites at ice level, that never happened. We have a new city mayor and ward councilor along with a couple of meetings about improving the water quality at the pond. Now that the computer is finally working again and the ski season is winding down( yes, there really was 2011-2012 ski season) we can get back to pond issues.

  ALGAE WARNING !!

Concern about algae is prompting health advisory notices at Sassaquin Pond, according to the city's director of public health.

"high bacteria counts , we are now seeing some activity with the harmful algae bloom," said Marianne De Souza.

The decision was based on local laboratory findings, in consultation with the MassDEP according to De Souza, who called the move a precaution and said the state will do testing next week.

"Unless we have cooling temperatures that the ... algae won't thrive in, Hurricane Irene just fed a lot of nutrients into that pond that will help the algae to grow.

All time record hits for web site Nov. 23'11

Posted by Anthony Arruda on Saturday, November 26, 2011,
The web site hit an all time record of 28 hits on Nov. 23, 2011, what a great way to get those turkey fixings done and keep informed of pond goings on.
We sent a quick email to Ron LaBelle(NB DPI) last week, because of the large number of sea gulls at the pond. The problem seems to have been corrected.
Thanks Ron

About Me

Hi Everyone, My name is Tony Arruda, and my wife Rita have lived at the pond over 35 years. Actually Rita has lived here all of her life. We remember the days when you could just walk down to the pond and take a swim. Now you have to be very aware of the water quality of the pond. This web site was created for the residents of Sassaquin Pond as an informational source and a tool to help to improve the water quality of the pond for future generations.
